Whatcom County E. Coli Outbreak Investigation News – On May 22, 2015, the Washington State Department of Health provided the following update on the E. coli O157:H7 outbreak in Whatcom County that was linked to the recent Milk Makers Fest:
- Twenty-five people have laboratory-confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 infection. Nine of these individuals did not attend the Milk Makers Fest, but had close contact with someone who did attend.
- Ten of those sickened have been hospitalized.
- Four of the outbreak victims developed Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
- Additional illnesses are still being investigated.
- Four of ten environmental samples collected from the Milk Makers Fest venue yielded E. coli O157:H7 that matched the outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7.
- All of the outbreak victims attended the Milk Makers Fest between April 21, 2015 and April 23, 2015; helped with the event between April 20, 2015 and April 24, 2015; or were in close contact with an ill person. Most of those sickened are children.
