Three Iowa Children Infected with E. coli – Source of Infection is Unknown

Staff writer for The Des Moines Register, Tom Alex, writes that the State Department of Public Health has issued a warning after three children from east-central Iowa developed an illness associated with E. coli.

All of the children are suffering from an infection with a strain known as enterohemorrhagic E. coli O26. It was reported that all three children are recovering.

Symptoms of E. coli food poisoning may include diarrhea (sometimes bloody), fever, vomiting, nausea, and abdominal cramps.

Wading pools, splash pads, and contact with farm kittens have been identified as possible sources of infection according to public health officials. According to state public health spokesperson, Kevin Teale, two of the children had visited both private and municipal pools.
