November 24, 2015: Montana Costco Chicken Salad Linked To E. Coli Cases In That State

The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) along with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and multiple state health departments have issued a notice to customers who have purchased Costco chicken salad between October 18, 2015 and November 23, 2015. The DPHHS cautioned that consumers who purchased chicken salad from Costco stores in Montana should not eat this product due to the risk of foodborne illness.

In its November 24, 2015, news release, the DPHHS announced that since late October, six individuals in Gallatin, Lewis and Clark, and Yellowstone counties were sickened by E. coli O157:H7. Two of those sickened required hospitalization. The six Montana cases are part of a larger multistate outbreak that has sickened 19 people from 7 states according to the CDC’s outbreak report.

Although the outbreak investigation is ongoing, Costco chicken salad has been linked to the illnesses.

Costco chicken salad (item #37719) has been removed from the store’s shelves, and Montana health authorities are contacting Costco stores to verify that the product is no longer available for purchase. Customers who still have Costco chicken salad in their possession are encouraged to dispose of any remaining product.

DPHHS Warns Not To Eat Costco Chicken Salad – Get Medical Attention If You Ate Chicken Salad And Become Ill

Dana Fejes of the DPHHS Communicable Disease Epidemiology Section stated “If customers have consumed this product, and they have become ill, we encourage them to consult with their healthcare provider.” She added, “Our concern is that chicken salad already purchased may still be in someone’s refrigerator or freezer and that product should not be consumed.”
